1731 Johann Scheuchzer Hairy Esau Bible
1731 Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics) by Johann Scheuchzer (1672-1733) " Hairy Esau" folio copper engraving drawn by a team of engravers under the direction of Johann Andreas Pfeffel (1674-1748). The goal of Scheuchzers work was to use the best contemporary science to illuminate the biblical account of human history in a sequence of 745 plates. Here he compares and contrasts Esaus hairiness with that of an ape (probably an orangutan). At the time there was little doubt that science (physica) supported the literal truth of the Biblical chronology of creation and history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and thought-provoking "Hairy Esau" folio copper engraving from Johann Scheuchzer's renowned 1731 Physica Sacra. With a team of skilled engravers under the guidance of Johann Andreas Pfeffel, Scheuchzer aimed to merge contemporary science with biblical accounts through an impressive sequence of 745 plates. In this particular illustration, Scheuchzer delves into the fascinating comparison between Esaus' hairiness and that of an ape, most likely an orangutan. During that era, there existed little doubt among scholars that scientific evidence (physica) unequivocally supported the literal truth behind the Bible's chronology of creation and history. The black and white monochrome aesthetic adds a touch of elegance to this artwork while emphasizing its historical significance. As we observe this image, we are transported back to the 18th century when notions surrounding human evolution were still in their infancy. This print not only invites us to ponder upon our origins but also serves as a testament to the delicate balance between science and religion during that time period. It encapsulates both curiosity about human origins and reverence for sacred texts within one frame. Paul D. Stewart has masterfully captured this piece from Science Photo Library, allowing us to appreciate its artistic brilliance while contemplating profound questions about our existence.
