1650 Bishop Usher Portrait tinted 4004BC

1650 Archbishop James Usher (Usser or Ussher). Theologian. 1670 copperplate engraved portrait printed in London for Nathan Ranew and Jonathon Robinson at the Kings Arms in St. Pauls Church Yard, later hand colouring. Usher was born 4 January 1581 died 21st March 1656. He famously placed the time and date of creation to the night preceding 26th October 4004 B.C. according to the proleptic Julian Calender. It was a work of complex scholarship rather than a guess from naive faith, and came in his 1650 book " Annals of the Old Testament deduced from the first origins of the World". Buffon revised that estimate in the 18th century to 75, 000 years, breaking with the tradition of Biblical authority. The age of life on earth continued to be debated throughout the 19th century, with Lord Kelvins pre-atomic physics indicating the earth was too young for complex life to have had time to evolve

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the 1650 Bishop Usher Portrait, a remarkable piece of art that holds immense historical and theological significance. Created by renowned theologian Archbishop James Ussher, this copperplate engraved portrait was printed in London for Nathan Ranew and Jonathon Robinson at the Kings Arms in St. Pauls Church Yard. Born on January 4th, 1581, Ussher's intellectual prowess is evident through his groundbreaking work. He gained fame for determining the precise time and date of creation to be October 26th, 4004 B. C. , as per the proleptic Julian Calendar. This extraordinary revelation was not based on blind faith but rather an intricate study presented in his influential book "Annals of the Old Testament deduced from the first origins of the World" published in 1650. Ussher's chronology challenged traditional biblical authority when Buffon revised it to approximately 75,000 years during the Enlightenment era. The age of life on Earth remained a subject of intense debate throughout the following centuries. Lord Kelvin's pre-atomic physics theories further complicated matters by suggesting that Earth was too young for complex life forms to have evolved naturally. These ongoing discussions surrounding human evolution and our planet's origin continue to shape scientific understanding even today. Paul D. Stewart beautifully captures this thought-provoking artwork that symbolizes not only religious beliefs but also scientific inquiry into humanity's existence and our place within the universe.
