Hand-coloured printed lithograph entitled Lilac, lithographed by Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) after an original by Valentine Bartholomew (1799-1879). From Bartholomew's A Selection of Flowers Adapted Principally for Students, published in London by R. Ackermann in 1821-1822. Bartholomew's book includes 36 hand-coloured lithographs and is one of the first works to employ lithography for botanical illustration. Plate [23]

Watercolour on paper of Tulipa Duck, Tulipa Lack, Tulipa cultivar and Tulipa sylvestris from Verzameling van Bloemen naar de Natuur geteekend door (Collection of flowers drawn from nature) by Pieter van Kouwenhoorn. Dating from c.1630s this leather-bound album contains 46 paintings probably prepared for publication as many plant names are given in Latin, French and German. Kouwenhoorn was a glass painter working in Haarlem and Leiden in the Netherlands and was one of the masters of the painter Gerard Dou (1613-1675)
