EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the picturesque town of Truro in Cornwall during the 1920s. The Millpool, a tranquil waterway, is beautifully captured as it flows gently upstream towards Wilkes Walk. The scene exudes a sense of serenity and natural beauty that has remained unchanged over the years. However, what truly catches one's attention is the small brick building perched precariously over the River Allen. This seemingly inconspicuous structure served an unusual purpose - it was a urinal! In those times, waste from this humble convenience flowed directly into the river below. Remarkably, this unassuming building would later become known as Tardis House and find new life as office space and even host Martin Creed's renowned Turner Prize-winning artwork in 2001: Work No. 227: The lights going on and off. The photographer behind this evocative image remains unknown, but their lens has immortalized an intriguing slice of history within Truro's landscape. It serves as a reminder of how our surroundings can evolve with time while still retaining elements that connect us to our past. Displayed at Royal Cornwall Museum, this print invites viewers to reflect upon not only the natural beauty of Cornwall but also its rich heritage and unexpected transformations throughout time.
