The Lander Monument, Lemon Street, Truro, Cornwall. Probably early 1900s

A close-up view of the Lander Monument from the top of Lemon Street. A woman with a child in a pushchair stands beside the railings outside 5 Upper Lemon Villas while a man stands next to the town house at 1 Falmouth Road. The Lander Monument was erected at the top of Lemon Street in 1835. The column was designed by Philip Sambell, who had overcome the difficulty of being born deaf to become a distinguished architect. The Monument celebrates the discoveries, including the discovery of the source of the River Niger in 1827, of the Lander brothers, Richard and John. The statue of Richard by Neville Northy Burnard was added in 1852 to commemorate his death during an expedition. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a close-up view of the magnificent Lander Monument, standing proudly at the top of Lemon Street in Truro, Cornwall. Taken in the early 1900s by photographer Arthur William Jordan, this image showcases not only the grandeur of the monument but also provides a glimpse into daily life during that era. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see a woman with a child in a pushchair standing beside the railings outside 5 Upper Lemon Villas. A man stands next to the elegant town house at 1 Falmouth Road. Their presence adds depth and scale to this scene, emphasizing both the size of the monument and its integration within city life. The Lander Monument itself holds great historical significance as it was erected in 1835 to honor Richard and John Lander, two intrepid explorers who made remarkable discoveries during their expeditions. Designed by Philip Sambell, an accomplished architect who overcame deafness to leave his mark on Cornwall's architectural landscape, this pillar commemorates their achievements. A notable addition came later when sculptor Neville Northy Burnard created a statue of Richard Lander in 1852 after his untimely death during another expedition. This memorial serves as a testament to human curiosity and exploration. Through this evocative photograph from Royal Cornwall Museum's collection, we are transported back in time to witness both history and everyday life intertwine against Truro's charming streetscape.
