EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 1900s, capturing a moment of education and discovery at the Laboratory of Truro Diocesan Training College. In this image, we see a young woman, a pupil of the college, fully engrossed in her work within the school laboratory. Truro Diocesan Training College was established in 1859 as a training institution for School Mistresses. At just 18 years old, these ambitious young women would enter the college after completing four or five years as apprentice teachers. This photograph beautifully encapsulates their dedication to honing their skills and expanding their knowledge. The laboratory setting symbolizes progress and innovation in teaching methods during that era. It is evident that practical learning played an essential role in shaping these aspiring educators. The unknown photographer skillfully captures both the concentration on the student's face and the intricate equipment surrounding her. Sadly, Truro Diocesan Training College closed its doors in 1938 but left behind an enduring legacy. Today it is known as St Paul's Church of England School - a testament to its impact on education throughout Cornwall. This remarkable image serves as a reminder of how far we have come while honoring those who paved the way for future generations of teachers.
