Visiting group near Giants Quoits after they fell, St Keverne, Cornwall. 9th January 1966

The visiting group includes Mr Nicholls on the right and probably the photographer Charles Woolf in the centre. The Giants Quoits stood on the cliffs of Manacle Point until they fell in early 1966 and were subsequently re-erected in 1967 in their current location near Rosenithon as the St Keverne Stone Company quarries expanded. Photographer: Joyce Greenham / Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this vintage print from 1966, we see a visiting group gathered near the fallen Giants Quoits at St Keverne, Cornwall. The image showcases Mr Nicholls on the right and quite possibly the talented photographer Charles Woolf in the center of the frame. These colossal stone structures once proudly stood atop the cliffs of Manacle Point until their untimely collapse early that year. The Giants Quoits held great significance to locals and visitors alike, serving as a testament to Cornwall's rich history and ancient heritage. However, with progress comes change, and as expansion plans for the St Keverne Stone Company quarries were set into motion, these magnificent stones found themselves re-erected in 1967 near Rosenithon – their current location. Photographed by Joyce Greenham or perhaps Charles Woolf himself, this snapshot offers a glimpse into an era long gone but not forgotten. It captures both the beauty of nature's power and humanity's resilience in preserving historical treasures. As we admire this photograph today, let us remember that it is thanks to dedicated individuals like Greenham and Woolf that such moments are preserved for future generations to appreciate. This image serves as a reminder of our connection to our past while inspiring us to protect and cherish our cultural heritage.
