EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured glass lantern slide takes us back in time to the picturesque Cape Cornwall, located in St Just, Penwith, Cornwall. The photograph was captured around 1890 by the talented photographer Gibson. The image showcases Cape Cornwall from the northeast side, offering a breathtaking view of its rugged coastline and stunning natural beauty. Above Porth Ledden (Porthledden), we can see Wheal Call Counthouse on the left, adding a touch of historical charm to this already mesmerizing scene. To the left of the cape lies an enchanting sight – The Brisons. These rocky islands lie just a mile away from mainland Cornwall and add an element of mystery and allure to this coastal landscape. Cape Cornwall holds great significance as it marks the point where Atlantic currents divide. Some waters flow north into the Bristol Channel and Irish Sea while others continue their journey towards becoming part of the English Channel. This print not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of nature's power and majesty. It allows us to appreciate both our rich history and awe-inspiring landscapes that have remained relatively unchanged over centuries.
