EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the charming village street of Port Gaverne in St Endellion, Cornwall, captured in the year 1906. The view between houses reveals a picturesque scene that stretches all the way to the beach. Two elegant ladies stand at the doorway of one of these quaint cottages, their gaze fixed upon the vast expanse of sea before them. As we shift our attention towards the beach, bathing huts dotting its sandy shores catch our eye. A solitary figure clad in a bathing suit braves the cool waters, adding life to this serene coastal landscape. It is fascinating to learn that Port Gaverne was once a bustling port used for exporting slate from nearby Delabole quarry. Additionally, it thrived as an active seining port with four pilchard cellars capable of processing an astounding 1000 tons of fish per week. However, by 1900 tourism had become the main industry for this idyllic village and continues to attract holidaymakers even today. This historic photograph transports us back in time when fishing played a vital role in shaping local livelihoods while also showcasing Port Gaverne's natural beauty and undeniable charm. Photographer T. Mitchell skillfully captures every detail within this frame - from cobblestone streets lined with traditional Cornish cottages to breathtaking views overlooking this peaceful cove on Cornwall's north coast. This remarkable image serves as a testament to both heritage and timeless allure found within Port Gaver
