EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken by the pioneering photographer William Henry Fox Talbot in 1845, transports us back to a momentous era in Cornwall's history. The image showcases "The Victualling Office" located in Plymouth, Devon, as seen from Mount Edgcumbe in Maker, Cornwall. A gentleman believed to be Captain Corry and members of the esteemed Edgcumbe family grace the foreground of this remarkable scene. As we gaze upon this early calotype photograph, our eyes are drawn to the gentleman intently peering through a telescope. His curiosity and fascination with the world around him are palpable. Beside him stand three elegant ladies, their presence adding an air of sophistication and refinement to the composition. It is worth noting that Lady Caroline Augusta Talbot, sister of William Henry Fox Talbot and wife of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, resided at Mount Edgcumbe during this period. This connection likely facilitated Talbot's access to such a picturesque location for his photographic endeavors. Notably significant is that this image marks one of Cornwall's earliest photographs ever captured. Furthermore, it holds historical importance as being featured as an illustration in The Art Journal Volume 8 (1846), where it served as an introduction to Fox Talbot's groundbreaking process utilizing sunlight on sensitized paper for multiple image reproduction—a true milestone in photography. Today, preserved within the Royal Cornwall Museum archives, this extraordinary piece stands testament not only to Cornish history but also serves as a symbol of innovation and progress within the realm of photography—an art form forever indebted to visionaries like William Henry Fox Talbot.
