Music Shop Noise, Queen Street, Lostwithiel, Cornwall. April 1992

Michael Ransley, who owns instrument making premises in Queen Street, has been forced to move out because of constant road works outside his shop. Mike is a specialist in baroque recorders and has been unable to tune his instruments for months. At one point the vibrations caused valuable violins to fall of his shop wall. He would like to stay in Lostwithiel but is looking in other nearby towns to set up a new business. Michael is pictured with his assistant, Naomi Guy, holding a bassoon. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken in April 1992, the bustling Queen Street of Lostwithiel, Cornwall comes alive with a symphony of sights and sounds. Amidst the chaos caused by ongoing road works outside his beloved music shop, Michael Ransley stands as a resilient figure. The unfortunate circumstances have forced him to relocate his instrument making premises after months of enduring constant noise and vibrations that disrupted his craft. Michael's expertise lies in crafting baroque recorders, but the incessant road works prevented him from tuning his instruments effectively for an extended period. The situation reached its climax when valuable violins tumbled off their wall mounts due to the relentless vibrations. Determined to continue pursuing his passion while remaining rooted in Lostwithiel, Michael reluctantly explores neighboring towns for potential new business locations. Accompanying Michael is Naomi Guy, his dedicated assistant who holds a bassoon with grace and poise. Together they embody resilience amidst adversity as they navigate through this challenging chapter in their musical journey. Photographed by Jonathan Barker against the backdrop of quaint Cornish architecture adorned with vibrant shop signs, this image encapsulates both the vibrancy and struggles faced by small businesses within close-knit communities like Lostwithiel. It serves as a poignant reminder of how external factors can impact even those most deeply connected to their town's cultural fabric.
