EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of the Great Hall and former chapel of St Mary Magdalene, located in Trecarrel Manor, Lezant, Cornwall. Taken in 1959 by renowned photographer Charles Woolf, this view highlights the exquisite windows and Tudor arched doorway that adorn this architectural marvel. Built during the early 16th century for Sir Henry Trecarrel, this hall and domestic chapel were unfortunately left unfinished in 1511. However, their historical significance cannot be understated. The site itself was first licensed for a chapel as far back as 1405, adding to its rich heritage. Sir Henry Trecarrel himself played a prominent role in local affairs; he served as mayor of Launceston in both 1536 and 1543 before his passing in 1544. Today, although transformed into a farmstead over time, Trecarrel Manor still stands proudly with extensions made during the subsequent centuries. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by Charles Woolf's lens, we are transported back through time to witness the splendor of religious architecture within historic manors. This photograph is not just an artistic representation but also serves as a testament to Cornwall's cultural legacy.
