St Benets Abbey, Lanivet, Cornwall. 1982

A view of St Benets Abbey which gives a view of the tower remains of the chapel. At the time of the photograph, the Grade II listed building stood beside the A30, the main road through Cornwall. The Abbey now stands on a much quieter road as the Bodmin by-pass is now part of the A30. It was built in 1411 and is at the half way point of the Saints Way, a medieval route taken by early pilgrims on their way from Ireland to France. The Abbey is of the Benedictine Order and later became bed and breakfast accommodation. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting St Benets Abbey in Lanivet, Cornwall, frozen in time during the year 1982. The image showcases the remnants of the abbey's tower and offers a glimpse into its rich history. Standing proudly beside the bustling A30, which served as Cornwall's main road back then, this Grade II listed building was an iconic landmark for travelers passing through. Today, however, St Benets Abbey enjoys a more serene setting on a quieter road since it became part of the A30 due to Bodmin by-pass construction. Constructed in 1411, this magnificent abbey holds great significance as it marks the halfway point of Saints Way - a medieval route embarked upon by early pilgrims journeying from Ireland to France. Originally belonging to the Benedictine Order, this historic site later transformed into bed and breakfast accommodation for visitors seeking solace amidst its ancient walls. Through Charles Woolf's lens, we are transported back to an era where Christian spirituality intertwined with architectural brilliance. Immerse yourself in Cornish village charm as you explore this mesmerizing photograph that encapsulates not only religious devotion but also echoes of joyous footsteps taken by countless pilgrims throughout centuries past. Let your imagination wander within these hallowed grounds where monks once sought enlightenment and tranquility amidst breathtaking natural beauty.
