Levant Mine, St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. 11th (?) July, 1894
Group of 29 miners posed underground at the 278 fathom level. The majority of the miners are wearing felt hats, either with the brim intact or with the brim removed. while others have tallow candles affixed to their hats with lumps of clay. Six of the group are smoking pipes. One miner holds a large saw. The group shows a whole range of ages. The youngest members of the group seem to be at the front, particularly the very young looking boy standing with drills tied with rope and slung around his shoulders, standing in the second row second from the left. Note the condition of the young miners boots, third from the left front row sitting. Photographer: John Charles Burrow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Royal Cornwall Museum takes us back to the depths of history, capturing a moment in time at Levant Mine on the 11th of July, 1894. A group of twenty-nine miners are strikingly posed underground at the impressive 278 fathom level. Their attire tells tales of their trade and daily life. The majority don felt hats, some with intact brims while others have removed theirs for comfort. Fascinatingly, tallow candles are affixed to several hats using lumps of clay, providing much-needed illumination in this dark subterranean world. Amidst this scene, six miners puff contentedly on their pipes as they work. A closer look reveals a miner proudly holding a large saw, perhaps an essential tool for their arduous tasks below ground. The diverse age range within the group is evident; it seems that the youngest members stand at the forefront. Notably among them is a boy who appears remarkably young, standing confidently with drills slung around his shoulders and tied with rope. Observing closely once more brings attention to one miner's worn boots in dire need of repair – a testament to the challenging conditions faced by these brave individuals every day. Photographed by John Charles Burrow during an era characterized by Victorian values and Cornish mining heritage, this image transports us back in time to witness firsthand what life was like for those who worked tirelessly beneath our feet.
