South Providence Mine (formerly Wheal Speed), Lelant, Cornwall. Early 1900s

General view of mine, with two newly constructed administration buildings in the middle ground on the right. Behind the buildings can be seen the headgear of a shaft with the remains of an earlier engine house. A raised tram way emerges from behind the buildings on the right to connect with a probable ore crushing area in the middle ground of the picture. A church tower or monument with steeple stands above the horizon. Other buildings together with what could be water wheels are on the left of the picture. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the South Providence Mine, formerly known as Wheal Speed, in Lelant, Cornwall during the early 1900s. The image provides a comprehensive view of the mine's landscape with intriguing details to explore. In the middle ground on the right side of the picture, two newly constructed administration buildings stand proudly against the backdrop of this industrial site. Behind these structures looms an impressive headgear of a shaft, accompanied by remnants of an earlier engine house – silent witnesses to past mining operations. A raised tramway emerges from behind the buildings on the right side and leads towards what appears to be an ore crushing area in the middle ground. This visual clue hints at one stage in Cornwall's rich mining history when minerals were extracted and processed here. Above the horizon stands a church tower or monument with a steeple, adding a touch of spirituality amidst this bustling industrial scene. Its presence serves as a reminder that even within such labor-intensive environments, faith played an important role for those who worked tirelessly underground. On closer inspection towards the left side of this photograph are other buildings dotting this expansive mine complex. Among them are possible water wheels that once harnessed nature's power to aid in various mining processes. Although we cannot credit any specific photographer for capturing this remarkable moment frozen in time, it is clear that their lens has immortalized not only an Edwardian-era Cornish mine but also its architectural features and surrounding landscapes for generations to come.
