EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in the midst of a nation at war, this remarkable print showcases the resilience and determination of the women who served in the First World War Women's Land Army. Taken in 1917 at Tregavethan Farm, Truro, Cornwall, it depicts a group of these brave women gathered together with their fellow comrades. Standing proudly in front of a hay cart is Mr Alfred Martin, owner of Tregavethan Farm, holding onto his loyal dog's paw. Seated just behind them is Mrs Martin, accompanied by a nurse dressed in her uniform. Surrounding them are these extraordinary women whose names have unfortunately been lost to time. Dressed in their distinctive uniforms consisting of boots, gaiters, felt hats and pale fabric overalls, they exude strength and unity. Some wear black armbands as a solemn reminder of those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Tregavethan Farm served as an essential training center for the Women's Land Army during this tumultuous period. The picturesque backdrop features towering trees and haystacks that stand witness to both the beauty and challenges faced on the home front. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan with great skill and sensitivity towards his subjects' dedication to agriculture and farming during wartime; this image serves as an enduring testament to their invaluable contribution to our nation's history.
