A Summers Day, Gurnards Head, Cornwall, David James (1853-1904)

Oil on canvas, English School, 1890. Gurnards Head is a long, narrow, headland near Treen, in the parish of Zennor, on the north coast of Cornwall. It is the site of an Iron Age promontory fort known as Trereen Dinas. Little has been recorded about David James, but it is certain that he was known during his lifetime as a maritime painter and that his main interest was in pure seascapes, particularly the motion of waves. He is also known to have worked extensively in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, very probably in St Ives. He is also known to have worked in Devon, Norfolk, North Yorkshire and South Wales. James had at least two paintings, A North Cornish Breaker and An Atlantic Roll, shown at the Royal Academy during the 1880s and is known to have exhibited there into the late 1890s

EDITORS COMMENTS
A Summer's Day, Gurnards Head, Cornwall" is a captivating oil painting by David James, an esteemed maritime painter of the late 19th century. This exquisite artwork depicts the rugged and picturesque coastline of Gurnards Head, a long and narrow headland near Treen in Cornwall. Painted in 1890, this masterpiece showcases James' profound fascination with seascapes and his ability to capture the mesmerizing motion of waves. The scene portrays the untamed beauty of nature as crashing breakers collide against towering granite cliffs. The artist skillfully brings to life the vibrant colors of summer; from the deep blue hues of the sky to the turquoise waters that blend seamlessly into brownish tones near shore. White horses dance upon each wave crest while a solitary boat braves through these tumultuous waters. Gurnards Head itself holds historical significance as it was once home to an Iron Age promontory fort known as Trereen Dinas. As we admire this artwork, we are transported back in time to witness both natural wonder and ancient history converging on this Cornish landscape. Although little is recorded about David James' life, his talent shines through his extensive body of work exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy during his lifetime. His mastery in capturing marine scenes extends beyond Cornwall to Devon, Norfolk, North Yorkshire, and South Wales. This exceptional print allows us to immerse ourselves in a moment frozen in time—a testament to both David James' artistic prowess and Cornwall's enduring allure.
