The Shrimper, Richard Harry Carter (1839-1911)

Oil on canvas, English School. Richard Harry Carter was born in Truro and became one of the buyers in Cornwall of copper for the smelting firm of Vivian & Sons, Swansea. His spare time was spent sketching around Cornwall. After a number of years, he relinquished his business appointment and devoted himself entirely to his painting. Carters early works were chiefly sea and coastal subjects, painted in watercolour, but later he expanded his genre to include figures and oil painting. Carter was also influenced by the work of Charles Napier Hemy whose style and subjects he greatly admired and whose yacht studio he frequently visited. Many of his best works were painted in Scotland and the Shetland Isles. He also visited Volendam and Dordrecht where he found new subjects to paint. Carter exhibited at the Royal Academy for eleven years and at the New Watercolour Society, now known as the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, for eighteen years. His watercolours were often on a monumental scale, often over six feet long

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Shrimper" a masterpiece by Richard Harry Carter, an esteemed artist of the English School. Born in Truro, Carter initially worked as a buyer for Vivian & Sons, a prominent copper smelting firm in Cornwall. However, his true passion lay in capturing the beauty of his surroundings through art. In his spare time, he would explore Cornwall and sketch its mesmerizing landscapes. Eventually, Carter decided to fully dedicate himself to painting and left behind his business career. His early works primarily featured sea and coastal scenes depicted with watercolors. As time went on, he expanded his repertoire to include figures and oil paintings. Carter greatly admired the work of Charles Napier Hemy and frequently visited Hemy's yacht studio for inspiration. Some of Carter's finest pieces were created during trips to Scotland and the Shetland Isles. He also found new subjects to paint during visits to Volendam and Dordrecht. Recognized for his talent, Carter exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy for eleven years and at the New Watercolour Society (now known as the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours) for eighteen years. Notably, many of his monumental-scale watercolor paintings exceeded six feet in length. This remarkable print preserves one such extraordinary artwork by Richard Harry Carter—a testament to both his artistic prowess and unwavering dedication to capturing the essence of Cornwall's natural beauty through brushstrokes on canvas.
