Ships in a Harbour, Eugene Boudin (1824-1898)
Oil on panel, French School, 19th century. Eugene Louis Boudin was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Boudin was a marine painter, and expert in the rendering of all that goes upon the sea and along its shores. Corot called him the king of the skies. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1853 and late in his career began to receive prizes and accolades for his work. In 1857/1858 Boudin befriended the young Claude Monet, then only 18, and persuaded him to give up his teenage caricature drawings and to become a landscape painter. He helped to instil in him a love of colour and light and of how these can be enhanced by their reflection in water. The two remained lifelong friends and Monet later paid tribute to Boudins early influence. Boudin joined Monet and his young friends in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1873, but never considered himself a radical or innovator. Boudin was made a member of the Legion d Honneur in 1892

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Eugene Boudin's masterpiece, "Ships in a Harbour". Painted during the 19th century, Boudin was one of the pioneering French landscape painters who dared to venture outdoors for inspiration. With his expertise lying in marine art, he skillfully captured the essence of everything that transpires upon the sea and along its shores. Renowned painter Corot hailed him as the "king of the skies" highlighting Boudin's exceptional ability to depict atmospheric elements with finesse. His artistic journey began at the Paris Salon in 1853, where he exhibited his works. As time went on, Boudin received numerous accolades and prizes for his remarkable talent. In a serendipitous encounter during 1857/1858, Boudin befriended an aspiring artist named Claude Monet when he was just 18 years old. Recognizing Monet's potential, he encouraged him to abandon caricature drawings and embrace landscape painting instead. This mentorship left an indelible mark on Monet's career as it instilled within him a deep appreciation for color, light, and their reflection in water. Throughout their lives, Boudin and Monet remained steadfast friends. In fact, Monet later acknowledged Boudin's early influence on his own artistic style. Together with other young artists like Monet himself, they participated in the groundbreaking first Impressionist exhibition held in 1873. Boudin never considered himself a radical or innovator but rather stayed true to his unique vision of capturing nature's beauty through brushstrokes. His immense contributions were recognized when he became a member of the Legion d'Honneur in 1892—a testament to his lasting impact on French art history.
