EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the early 1900s showcases a scene of bustling activity at Trewhella Farm in St Hilary, Cornwall. The image captures the essence of harvest time, with men and women diligently working together to bring in the bountiful crop. In the foreground, a magnificent Aveling & Porter steam engine takes center stage as it powers through the threshing process. This impressive piece of machinery was built in Rochester, Kent and bears the unique identification number 3424. Its rhythmic chugging fills the air as it separates grain from straw with remarkable efficiency. Amongst this industrious atmosphere stands Mr Berryman, believed to be the farmer himself. He confidently sits atop a horse-drawn trap, gripping his whip firmly while overseeing operations. On his left side is Miss Berryman, possibly his daughter or wife, elegantly seated amidst sheaves of harvested crops. The photograph offers us a glimpse into rural life during this era; where hard work and teamwork were essential for success on these fertile lands. It also serves as a testament to technological advancements that revolutionized farming practices during that period. Although we cannot attribute this stunning image to any specific photographer due to its unknown origin, it has found its place within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection - preserving an important slice of Cornish history for generations to come.
