EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, three Westland Lysander II aircraft of 225 Squadron Royal Air Force soar through the sky, leaving a trail of vapor in their wake against a backdrop of ominous clouds. Taken by renowned photographer Charles E. Brown in April 1940, during the early days of World War II, this image captures the raw power and determination of the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the face of adversity. The Westland Lysander, a versatile and agile aircraft, was a crucial asset to the RAF during the early stages of the war. Its short takeoff and landing capabilities made it an ideal reconnaissance and liaison aircraft, allowing it to operate from makeshift strips deep behind enemy lines. In this photograph, N1254, L4753, and N1250 fly in formation, their markings clearly visible on their wings and fuselages. The year 1940 was a pivotal moment in the history of the RAF. The Battle of Dunkirk was underway, and the skies above Britain were a battleground as the RAF fought to protect the country from the relentless attacks of the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe. The courage and skill of the RAF pilots, including those of 225 Squadron, were instrumental in turning the tide of the war. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the RAF during World War II. It captures the essence of a pivotal moment in history, a moment when the fate of a nation hung in the balance, and the RAF stood resolute in defense of freedom.
