EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the imposing figure of HMS Furious (R38) dominates the tranquil waters of the Firth of Forth. Commissioned in 1917, this impressive warship served as the Royal Navy's first dedicated aircraft carrier, playing a pivotal role in the final years of World War One. With a length of 618 feet and a top speed of 21 knots, HMS Furious was a formidable presence on the high seas. However, it was her innovative design and unique capabilities that truly set her apart. Equipped with a flight deck and hangar, she was able to carry and launch up to 24 aircraft, revolutionizing naval warfare and paving the way for the carrier-borne aviation that would come to define the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the decades to come. During the war, HMS Furious saw action in the North Sea, providing air support for the Royal Navy's blockade of German ports and conducting raids on enemy targets. In 1919, she was transferred to the RAF and became the flagship of the Marine Wing, the forerunner of the RAF's Fleet Air Arm. This photograph captures HMS Furious in her element, with a squadron of Sopwith Camel biplanes lined up on her flight deck, ready for takeoff. The men in the foreground, clad in their leather flying helmets and goggles, embody the spirit of adventure and innovation that characterized the early days of military aviation. Today, HMS Furious is a cherished symbol of the rich history of the Royal Navy and the RAF. This photograph, taken in the Firth of Forth, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the future of warfare was being written on the wings of brave men and their machines.
