Robert Koch, German bacteriologist
Robert Koch (1843-1910), German bacteriologist. Along with Louis Pasteur, Koch is considered the founder of modern medical bacteriology. His techniques for cultivating bacteria, both in liquid and solid media, and his use of stains, enabled him to study the life cycles of bacteria in laboratory conditions. As a result he was able to isolate the specific bacteria responsible for certain diseases. The high point of his career was the identification in 1882 of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium responsible for tuberculosis (TB). Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine and physiology in 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Robert Koch, a renowned German bacteriologist. Known as one of the founders of modern medical bacteriology alongside Louis Pasteur, Koch revolutionized the field with his groundbreaking techniques and discoveries. In this image, we see a distinguished man in his fifties or sixties, exuding an air of wisdom and expertise. His piercing gaze reflects years spent studying bacteria under laboratory conditions. With his pioneering methods for cultivating bacteria in both liquid and solid media, as well as his innovative use of stains, Koch was able to delve into the intricate life cycles of these microorganisms. The pinnacle of Koch's illustrious career came in 1882 when he successfully identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis—the culprit behind tuberculosis (TB). This monumental breakthrough paved the way for effective diagnosis and treatment strategies against this deadly disease. Recognizing his immense contributions to medicine and physiology, Koch was honored with the Nobel Prize in 1905. His legacy extends far beyond TB research; he also made significant strides in understanding anthrax and other bacterial diseases. As we admire this remarkable photograph capturing a pivotal figure from history, let us remember Robert Koch—a visionary scientist who forever changed our understanding of microbiology through tireless dedication to unraveling nature's mysteries.
