Puffins carry sand eels for their young as they fly above the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast, northern England July 8, 2013. The Farne Islands, which lie off the coast of northeast England, are home to a huge array of wildlife. The islands are owned and protected by the British conservation charity, the National Trust, which says they host some 23 species of seabird, as well as a substantial colony of grey seals, who come to have their pups there in the autumn. Every five years the National Trust carries out a census of the islands population of puffins, and this years survey showed there were almost 40, 000 nesting pairs on the islands - an 8 percent rise from 2008. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo captures the enchanting sight of puffins gracefully soaring above the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast in northern England. The puffins are not only in flight but also carry sand eels, a vital food source for their young ones waiting back at their nests. These islands, owned and protected by the British conservation charity, the National Trust, are renowned for their rich biodiversity. The Farne Islands serve as a sanctuary to an impressive variety of wildlife species. With approximately 23 different seabird species calling these islands home, it is no wonder that they have become a haven for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike. Additionally, grey seals flock to these shores every autumn to give birth to their adorable pups. In this particular image captured on July 8th, 2013 by Nigel Roddis from Reuters Images, we witness nature's delicate balance and resilience. Puffin populations have been closely monitored by the National Trust over time through periodic censuses. The latest survey revealed an encouraging increase of almost 40,000 nesting pairs on the islands - an uplifting growth rate of 8% since 2008. This photograph serves as a reminder of both the beauty and fragility of our natural world while showcasing how dedicated organizations like the National Trust work tirelessly to protect and preserve such precious ecosystems for generations to come.
