EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1930s, when rail travel was at its peak and the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) sought to entice travelers to Durham. The poster, skillfully designed by Fred Taylor, showcases the magnificent Duram Castle, a historic landmark dating all the way back to 1072. Once home to the esteemed Prince Bishops of Durham until 1832, this medieval fortress now houses the prestigious University College of the University of Durham. Fred Taylor's artistic prowess shines through in this piece as he expertly captures both the grandeur and rich history of Duram Castle. Known for his remarkable ceiling paintings at Lloyds' Underwriting Room and striking murals for Reeds Lacquer Room, Taylor's talent extended beyond canvas walls. His work graced renowned galleries such as the Royal Academy while also being commissioned by prominent organizations like London Transport and shipping companies. Measuring an impressive 1016 mm x 635 mm, this print transports viewers into a world where castles stand tall against time and railways serve as gateways to exploration. Preserved within National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, it serves not only as a testament to Taylor's artistry but also as a nostalgic reminder of an era when rail travel held immense allure and destinations like Durham beckoned with their timeless charm.
