EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" Vol.3 Plate 44, dates back to 1888. The artwork depicts a male and female Paradise Shelduck, also known as Putangitangi (Tadorna variegata), in their natural habitat. The female is shown with her elegant, speckled plumage, while the male displays his vibrant, iridescent green and purple feathers, which are particularly prominent during the breeding season. The Paradise Shelduck is endemic to New Zealand and is one of the country's most iconic waterfowl species. They are named for their distinctive, melodic calls, which sound like the Maori word for paradise. These birds are found in both the North and South Islands, and they prefer to inhabit wetlands, marshes, and grasslands near bodies of water. Keulemans' meticulous attention to detail is evident in this exquisite painting, which captures the intricacies of the Paradise Shelduck's plumage and anatomy. The artist's use of watercolor creates a sense of depth and realism, making it an invaluable historical record of these beautiful birds. Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" was an ambitious project that aimed to document all the native bird species of New Zealand. The publication of this work marked a significant contribution to the field of ornithology and remains an essential reference for bird enthusiasts and researchers today.
