Celadon and Amelia in a storm, by John Wood
Two figures in a stormy landscape. On the left is a young man dressed in a beret style hat, white ruffed neck collar, jacket, belt and breeches, with stockings and shoes. He looks up toward the cloudy black sky, and holds aloft in his right hand a shepherds crook. He has his left arm around the waist of a young dark haired woman in a full length dress, with short puffed sleeves and low d© colletage, a sash and shoes. She also looks up at the sky, her hands clasped in front of her, as if in supplication. In the background on the left is a break in the clouds, with, below the figures, trees and a town.
Illustrates part of " The Seasons" by James Thomson - " Summer", published in 1727.
"... Young Celedon
And his Amelia were a matchless pair,
With equal virtue formed and equal grace,
The same, distinguished by their sex alone:
Hers the mild lustre of the blooming morn,
And his the radiance of the risen day."
Unfortunately, as they wander through the woods, Amelia is struck by lightning and dies: " not always on the guilty head descends the fatal flash"

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Celadon and Amelia in a storm" by John Wood, we are transported to a tumultuous landscape where two figures stand amidst the chaos. On the left, a young man dressed in an elegant beret style hat and traditional attire gazes up at the dark, cloudy sky. He holds aloft a shepherd's crook in his right hand, as if seeking protection from above. His left arm is wrapped around the waist of a young woman named Amelia. Amelia, with her dark hair cascading down her shoulders, wears a full-length dress adorned with short puffed sleeves and a low neckline. She too looks towards the heavens with hands clasped together in supplication. The intensity of their expressions reflects their shared vulnerability against nature's wrath. Set against the backdrop of trees and distant town on the left side of the image, we witness these two individuals who embody equal virtue and grace but are distinguished only by their gender. They are Young Celadon and his beloved Amelia - an unmatched pair whose beauty shines brightly. However, tragedy befalls them as they wander through the woods; Amelia is struck by lightning and meets an untimely demise. This heart-wrenching event reminds us that fate can strike without discrimination or mercy – not always punishing those deserving it alone. Wood's composition beautifully captures both love's fragility amidst nature's fury while paying homage to James Thomson's poem "The Seasons" specifically highlighting Summer published in 1727. Let this poignant image serve as a reminder that even within life’s darkest storms, love remains eternal – transcending time itself.
