EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back in time to the golden era of train travel along the picturesque Yorkshire Coast. Produced by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) between 1923 and 1947, this vintage poster was designed to entice travelers to embark on a scenic journey to this breathtaking coastal destination. The artwork featured in this poster is a masterpiece created by Frank Mason, an accomplished artist with a deep connection to the sea. Educated at HMS Conway and having spent considerable time at sea himself, Mason's expertise shines through his marine and coastal subjects. His attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke, capturing the essence of Scarborough's rich history. In particular, this illustration depicts Paul Jones Fight off Scarborough on 23 September 1779 - a significant event that unfolded centuries ago. The image showcases ships engaged in battle amidst crashing waves and dramatic skies, transporting viewers into an epic maritime clash from another era. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Mason also contributed significantly to engineering and shipbuilding industries in Leeds and Hartlepool. This multi-talented individual left an indelible mark not only on railway posters but also on various other fields related to transportation. As we gaze upon this remarkable print from the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, we are reminded of both our fascination with history and our enduring love for exploration along Britain's stunning coastline.
