Poster produced for the Great Western Railway (GWR), promoting rail travel to the county of Devon, showing an idealised view of the sea and cliffs, with fields and cottages in the foreground. One of a series of three posters featuring artwork by Ronald Lampitt, which sought to create an illusion of realism through the use of mosaic-like tesselated rectangles of pure colour. 1, 200 copies of the Devon poster were issued, and Lampitt was paid the unusually high sum of £ 200 for each design used in the series. Created by the talented artist Ronald Lampitt, this artwork aimed to transport viewers into an idyllic world of natural beauty and tranquility. The poster presents a picturesque scene of the sea and cliffs, with charming fields and cottages adorning the foreground. Lampitt's unique artistic approach involved using mosaic-like tesselated rectangles of pure color, resulting in a mesmerizing illusion of realism. Only 1,200 copies were ever issued for this particular Devon poster series, making it a rare gem among railway enthusiasts. It is worth noting that Lampitt received an exceptionally high payment of £200 for each design used in this collection – a testament to his exceptional talent. Printed by J Weiner Ltd. , this print allows us to appreciate not only Lampitt's artistry but also serves as a window into British history during the golden age of rail travel. Transport yourself back in time as you admire this magnificent piece depicting coastal cliffs, seaside villages, and endless stretches of breathtaking coastline - all waiting to be explored in beautiful Devonshire.
