Artwork by Frank Newbould (1887-1951), who studied at Bradford College of Art and joined the War Office in 1942. He designed posters for the LNER (London & North Eastern Railway), GWR (Great Western Railway), Orient Line and Belgian Railways

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic "Flying Scotsman" locomotive, a symbol of speed and elegance during its time. Produced as a promotional poster for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), it aimed to entice travelers to experience the non-stop service between Kings Cross in London and Waverley in Edinburgh. Spanning an impressive distance of 392 miles, this journey required a change of driver and fireman midway. The artwork by Frank Newbould beautifully captures the essence of this legendary train. In this particular scene, we witness a momentary pause as one driver prepares to take over from his colleague. The locomotive stands tall and proud, exuding power with its sleek design and billowing steam. Newbould's artistic talent shines through in his ability to convey movement and dynamism within a static image. His attention to detail is evident, capturing every intricate feature of both the train itself and its surroundings. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece, we are transported back in time to an era when rail travel was at its zenith. This print serves as a nostalgic reminder of the golden age of railways, where journeys were not just about reaching destinations but also about experiencing adventure and luxury along the way. Preserved by the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print immortalizes an important chapter in railway history – one that continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide.
