View of docks with SS Duke of Argyll moored alongside a quay, c 1928-1948

Original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson for a London Midland & Scottish Railway poster. Many British railway companies also operated ferry services. Wilkinson was commissioned by several of the companies to produce artwork for use in posters promoting their services. The London Midland & Scottish Railway Company (LMS) was formed in 1923, and operated ferry services across the Irish Sea on routes between Holyhead and Dublin, and Heysham and Belfast. In 1948 all the private railway companies shipping fleets were nationalised, becoming part of the British Transport Commission. The SS Duke of Argyll served the Heysham to Belfast route between 1928 and 1955. National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases. © Please read our licence terms. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases a stunning view of docks, where the majestic SS Duke of Argyll is moored alongside a quay. Originally an oil painting by the talented Norman Wilkinson for a London Midland & Scottish Railway poster, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of British railway companies' ferry services during the late 1920s to 1948. Wilkinson's exceptional talent led him to be commissioned by various railway companies to create promotional posters for their ferry services. The LMS, formed in 1923, operated ferry routes across the Irish Sea between Holyhead and Dublin, as well as Heysham and Belfast. This particular vessel, the SS Duke of Argyll, served on the Heysham-Belfast route from 1928 until its retirement in 1955. It is worth noting that in 1948, all private railway company shipping fleets were nationalized under the British Transport Commission. This marked an important milestone in British transportation history. The National Railway Museum has preserved this remarkable print from their Pictorial Collection. It serves as a testament to both Wilkinson's artistic prowess and Britain's rich maritime heritage. As we admire this image today, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also its historical significance in showcasing one aspect of Britain's extensive transportation network during that era.
