Plymouth, Devon, GWR/SR poster, 1938

Poster produced for Great Western Railway (GWR) and Southern Railway (SR) to promote rail travel to Plymouth, Devon, which is described as a Delightful Centre for Holidays'. The poster was issued jointly by GWR, SR and the local council. The two companies each paid 25% of the cost, and the council the remainder. Artwork by Claude Buckle, who originally trained as an architect but turned to fine art in 1928. He painted in both oil and watercolour and was a prolific poster artis for the Great Western Railway (GWR) and British Railways (BR). Much of his original poster artwork is held at the National Railway Museum

The Devon Belle, SR poster, 1947

Poster produced for Southern Railway (SR) to promote rail services between the West of England and Waterloo Station, London. The poster shows The Devon Belle, an all-Pullman locomotive with an observation carriage travelling at speed through a light-coloured, nearly monotonal landscape. The service ran on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays and called at Sidmouth Junction, Exeter Central, Ilfracombe and Plymouth Friary. Artwork by Marc Fernand Severin, who was born in Brussels and lived in England from 1932 to 1940 and from 1945 to 1949, working first as Art Director at an advertising agency and then as a free-lance artist, advertising designer and book illustrator. Poster produced for the Great Western Railway (GWR), promoting rail travel to the county of Devon, showing an idealised view of the sea and cliffs, with fields and cottages in the foreground. One of a series of three posters featuring artwork by Ronald Lampitt, which sought to create an illusion of realism through the use of mosaic-like tesselated rectangles of pure colour. 1, 200 copies of the Devon poster were issued, and Lampitt was paid the unusually high sum of £200 for each design used in the series.
