South Wales Echo - Front Page January 29 1963 - Cardiff Arms Park as the Welsh National

South Wales Echo - Front Page January 29 1963 - Cardiff Arms Park as the Welsh National Stadium. A new ground for club rugby on the present Arms Park cricket site. A County Cricket Ground, plus hockey and rugby pitches in Sophia Gardens. These are the main proposals in a bold plan revealed today by Cardiff Athletic Club a plan which would give Wales its wickenham, uniquely placed in the heart of the capital city. The whole concept was put before Cardiff City Council, sitting as a general purposes committee, this afternoon. They must give approval to leasing part of Sophia Gardens to the Athletic Club before the project receives the consideration of the Welsh Rugby Union. If the WRU approve, it is of course, for them to decide how the Arms Park main stadium would be developed. The plan put before the city council today by the Cardiff Athletic Club are a suggestion of what might happen. The Cardiff club are willing to give up their birthright at the Cardiff Arms Park in a bid to retain the world-famous arena as the national rugby ground of Wales. They see the plan as the only way of keeping international rugby in the capital in the face of WRU investigations to build a national stadium in Bridgend
