Campbell Aird, a hotelier from Moffat, Scotland, using his new limb in August 1998 - the worlds first bionic arm.
In August 1998 the worlds first bionic arm was fitted to Campbell Aird at the Princess Margaret Rose Hospital, Fairmilehead, Edinburgh, Scotland. The arm, the first to have a powered shoulder, elbow, wrist and fingers, was controlled by electronic micro-sensors (and presumably a bit of witchcraft) that sent pulses to the arm.

It was August 1998 when this remarkable event took place at the Princess Margaret Rose Hospital in Fairmilehead, Edinburgh. This revolutionary prosthetic arm boasted an array of powered features that enabled it to mimic natural movement with incredible precision. Equipped with electronic micro-sensors and an ingenious control system, it responded to Campbell's muscle movements by sending pulses throughout the artificial limb. The result was nothing short of extraordinary. Captured on August 27th, 1998 by photographer Chris Watt, this image encapsulates both hope and progress in the field of science and technology. Campbell Aird pours a soft drink effortlessly into a cup using his new bionic arm – an act that once seemed impossible for someone who had lost their limb.
