Gravelly Hill Interchange opened. Pictured, the Rt. Hon. Mr Peter Walker, Secretary of State for the Environment, cuts the tape at the opening today. The Lancaster red rose was given as a symbol of thanks for the completion of this last section of the motorway system linking Lancashire and the North West with London and the South East. In addition, to symbolise the importance of the occasion for Lancaster, the Lord Mayor of London has today sent a very large bouquet of red roses to the Mayor of Lancaster. The bouquet contains 243 roses, one for each mile between Mansion House, London and the Town Hall of Lancaster. The roses, a welcome gesture of good will, were carried in the first private vehicle to travel from London to the North West through the new Motorway link. 24th May 1972. © Mirrorpix

Gravelly Hill Interchange Opens - A Milestone in Motorway History
In this photo print, we witness a historic moment as the Rt. Hon. Mr Peter Walker, Secretary of State for the Environment, cuts the tape at the opening of Gravelly Hill Interchange. The significance of this event cannot be overstated, as it marks the completion of the last section connecting Lancashire and the North West with London and the South East. To commemorate this achievement, a symbolic gesture was made by presenting Mr. Walker with a Lancaster red rose – a token of gratitude for his contribution to this monumental motorway system. Furthermore, highlighting its importance to Lancaster itself, an extravagant bouquet containing 243 red roses was sent from Lord Mayor of London to Mayor of Lancaster – each rose representing one mile between Mansion House in London and Lancaster's Town Hall. Adding charm to this occasion is another delightful detail - these beautiful roses were carried in the first private vehicle that traversed from London to North West through this newly established motorway link. Captured on May 24th, 1972 by Bill Ellmann, this image encapsulates not only an engineering marvel but also showcases how transportation networks can foster goodwill and unity across regions.
