Gravelly Hill Interchange opened. Pictured, (left) the Rt. Hon. Mr Peter Walker, Secretary of State for the Environment, at the opening today. The Lancaster red rose was given as a symbol of thanks for the completion of this last section of the motorway system linking Lancashire and the North West with London and the South East. In addition, to symbolise the importance of the occasion for Lancaster, the Lord Mayor of London has today sent a very large bouquet of red roses to the Mayor of Lancaster. The bouquet contains 243 roses, one for each mile between Mansion House, London and the Town Hall of Lancaster. The roses, a welcome gesture of good will, were carried in the first private vehicle to travel from London to the North West through the new Motorway link. 24th May 1972. © Mirrorpix

Gravelly Hill Interchange - A Milestone in Motorway History
In this photo print, we witness a momentous occasion as the Rt. Hon. Mr Peter Walker, Secretary of State for the Environment, inaugurates the long-awaited Gravelly Hill Interchange. This monumental event marks the completion of the final section connecting Lancashire and the North West with London and the South East. As a symbol of gratitude for this remarkable achievement, a Lancaster red rose is presented to Mr. Walker, representing appreciation from all those who will benefit from this new motorway system. The significance of this milestone extends beyond mere infrastructure; it signifies progress and unity among regions. To commemorate Lancaster's pivotal role in this development, an extraordinary gesture arrives from London's Lord Mayor—a grand bouquet containing 243 red roses—one for each mile between Mansion House and Lancaster Town Hall. These beautiful flowers serve as a token of goodwill on such an auspicious day. Adding to its historical importance, these vibrant roses embark on their journey through the newly opened motorway link in style—the first private vehicle to traverse from London to the North West via this modern marvel. Captured on May 24th, 1972 by Bill Ellmann, this photograph encapsulates not only an engineering feat but also celebrates collaboration and connectivity that will shape generations to come.
