EDITORS COMMENTS
Mr and Mrs Wilkinson bid farewell to Meadowsweet Grocers, marking the end of an era on Mill Road, Cambridge. This nostalgic photo captures them standing proudly behind the counter, surrounded by shelves adorned with a delightful array of tins. Bovril cardboard cut-out signs and Ambrosia Creamed rice advertisements add a touch of traditional English charm to this snapshot from 2nd May 1986. Mill Road, a bustling street in southeast Cambridge, serves as the backdrop for this cherished memory. Connecting various parts of the city and intersecting with major roads and railway lines, it has long been a hub of activity. The Wilkinsons' shop sits between Petersfield and Romsey wards, separated only by the railway line. As we gaze upon this image captured in the 1980s, we are transported back to an era when local grocers were at the heart of communities. The warm welcome offered by Mr and Mrs Wilkinson is palpable through their friendly smiles. Their store not only provided essential groceries but also served as a gathering place for neighbors sharing stories over eggs or browsing through shelves stocked with familiar brands. This photograph from Memory Lane Prints evokes fond memories of simpler times when shopping was personal and connections were built within our own neighborhoods.
