EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the haunting aftermath of destruction at The Tivoli Cinema in Weston Super Mare during World War II. Taken on June 30th, 1942, it serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of war on this peaceful Somerset and Avon area. In the nights leading up to this image, Weston endured what can only be described as "hell on earth". A relentless barrage of 52 high-explosive bombs and over 10,000 savage incendiary devices rained down upon the town. The flames that engulfed the crumbling ruins were so intense that they could be seen from Wales, marking these days as some of Weston's darkest during the war. The Tivoli Cinema stands here as a symbol of resilience amidst chaos. Once a place where people sought entertainment and escape from their daily lives, it now lies in ruins—its grandeur reduced to rubble by enemy attacks. As we gaze upon this photograph today, we are reminded not only of the horrors endured by those who lived through such times but also of our duty to remember their sacrifices. This image is a testament to human strength and determination in even the most challenging circumstances. Let us honor those who suffered during these tumultuous years and strive for peace so that future generations may never experience such devastation again.
