EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the devastating aftermath of an air raid during World War Two in Bristol, England. Although the exact name of the children's hospital remains unknown, historical records suggest that it could be the Children's Hospital on St. Michael's Hill. The city of Bristol endured significant destruction and loss during this period, with this particular bombing occurring on 2nd and 4th December 1940. During these attacks, a tragic toll was taken as 256 lives were lost and another 229 individuals suffered injuries. This image serves as a haunting reminder of the immense sacrifices made by both civilians and institutions during wartime. Bristol ranked as England's fifth most heavily bombed city between November 24th, 1940 to May 15th, 1944. The relentless bombings left behind ruins and devastation that reshaped the landscape of this historic city. The photograph itself dates back to approximately December 5th, 1940—just days after the destructive event took place. It stands as a testament to resilience amidst chaos while serving as a somber tribute to those who lost their lives or experienced unimaginable hardship during this dark chapter in history. Memory Lane Prints has preserved this powerful visual record from World War Two—a stark reminder of how conflict can shatter even places meant for healing and care.
