EDITORS COMMENTS
The devastating aftermath of war: A haunting image captures the scene at No. 38 Dudley Road, Folkestone on 10th September 1944. The tranquility of this once peaceful neighborhood was shattered when a shell fired from German batteries on the French coast struck this very house. Tragically, Mrs. Daisey Mockett lost her life instantly, while her elderly mother Margaret fought for survival but succumbed to her injuries two days later at the Royal Victoria Hospital. This heart-wrenching photograph serves as a stark reminder of the indiscriminate nature of conflict during World War II. Thirteen others, including three innocent children, were also injured in this horrific incident that left an indelible mark on the community. The destruction caused by this single shell is evident as three houses lay demolished and twenty more severely damaged. Fifty other homes suffered slight damage in what became known as 'Hell Fire Corner. ' This snapshot freezes a moment in time where lives were forever altered and dreams shattered amidst the chaos and uncertainty of war. As we reflect upon these dark times, let us honor those who endured such hardships during the home front struggle against tyranny. May their sacrifice serve as a constant reminder that peace must always be cherished and protected.
