EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures the remarkable RADAR equipment used for both offensive and defensive purposes during World War II. The image showcases a "Chain Home". Receiver Room, where cutting-edge technology was employed to protect Great Britain from enemy attacks. The Radar "Chain Home" station was an early form of radiolocation stations strategically placed across the country as part of the defense system. Two main types were established - East Coast and West Coast variants. The East Coast type featured towering 360-ft high self-supporting steel transmitting towers, while the West Coast type utilized slightly shorter but equally sturdy 325-ft high guyed steel transmitting masts. In this particular scene, we see a console on the right side of the room and a receiver on the left, highlighting how operators would monitor incoming signals and gather crucial intelligence about potential threats in real-time. This advanced communication technology played a vital role in safeguarding Britain's airspace during one of history's most challenging periods. As we gaze upon this photograph issued in August 1945, it serves as a poignant reminder of not only the immense scientific advancements achieved during wartime but also pays tribute to those brave men and women who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes to defend their nation using these innovative RADAR systems.
