HMS Truant has returned to Britain after an absence of 21 years in the Mediterranean

The print captures a historic moment as the HMS Truant returns to Britain after an astonishing 21-year absence in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, and Java Seas. As she docks alongside the depot ship, a remarkable sight unfolds - the Skull and Crossbones "success" flag of the Submarine Service proudly flies atop her mast. This flag symbolizes Truant's incredible achievements during her time at sea, with over 20 Axis ships sunk or damaged under her command. Intriguingly, four stars are displayed on the flag, denoting successful gun actions carried out by Truant's crew. Additionally, sixteen white bars represent ships torpedoed by this formidable submarine. Leading this exceptional team was Lieutenant Commander HAV Haggard DSO, BSC - a distinguished officer who hailed from an illustrious naval lineage. The photograph showcases some of the officers and men of HMS Truant standing proudly beside their iconic skull and crossbones flag. Their expressions reveal both exhaustion from their arduous journey and immense pride in their accomplishments. The date etched beneath reads December 10th, 1942 - a significant moment amidst the chaos of World War II.
