EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Memory Lane Prints captures the aftermath of a significant event during World War II. The image showcases the devastating impact of RAF Bomber Command's attack on the S. A. des Pneumatiques Dunlop factory in Montlucon, near Vichy, on the night of September 15th-16th, 1943. The photographic reconnaissance reveals extensive damage inflicted upon this sprawling plant that covered approximately 135 acres. The photograph vividly depicts a scene of destruction and chaos. Out of the 26 major buildings within the factory complex, twelve have been completely destroyed, while ten others bear severe damage. Fires continue to rage several hours after the attack, with dense black smoke billowing into the sky from a rubber store. Before its transformation into a target for military action, this factory specialized in producing various types of pneumatic and inner tires for vehicles ranging from lorries and cars to bicycles and aircrafts. As war escalated, it began receiving rubber supplies from Germany and became a crucial supplier of tires for Axis army vehicles and aircraft. This poignant image serves as a reminder not only of the immense power unleashed during wartime but also highlights how strategic strikes could disrupt enemy supply chains effectively. It stands as an enduring testament to both RAF Bomber Command's determination to cripple German war efforts and their ability to inflict heavy damage upon key industrial targets like this Dunlop factory at Montlucon.
