The passage of the convoy from the west to Malta on June 14/16 was under the command of Vice-
Admiral Curtesis. It was sighted and shadowed by enemy aircraft before It reached the Sardinia - North
Africa channel, and from then onwards was subject to very violent air attacks.
Despite these attacks, and the threat of attack by two enemy cruisers and four
destroyers, which were driven off, the Convoy was able to reach Malta although with serious losses, in the early hours of 16th June 1942.
43 enemy planes were destroyed for certain with 22
" probables" and many others damaged by Ant-Aircraft fire from convoy and escorts, and by naval aircraft.
Attacks were also made on the enemy cruisers and destroyers by British aircraft, which claimed several

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the passage of a convoy from the west to Malta on June 14/16,1942. Under the command of Vice-Admiral Curtesis, this convoy faced numerous challenges along its journey. Enemy aircraft were quick to spot and shadow them even before reaching the Sardinia-North Africa channel, subjecting them to relentless air attacks. Despite these harrowing circumstances, the convoy pressed on with unwavering determination. They successfully fended off two enemy cruisers and four destroyers that attempted to attack them. The resilience of both the convoy and their escorts allowed them to reach Malta in the early hours of June 16th, albeit with serious losses. During this treacherous journey, British naval aircraft engaged in fierce battles with enemy planes and warships. The photograph reveals a striking image of a towering "stack" of bombs ahead of a battleship - an ominous reminder of the constant threat they faced. The bravery displayed by all involved cannot be understated. Throughout their perilous voyage, they managed to destroy at least 43 enemy planes while damaging many others through anti-aircraft fire from both the convoy and its escorts. British aircraft also made successful attacks on enemy cruisers and destroyers, claiming several hits. This print serves as a poignant reminder of those who risked everything for victory during World War II's most challenging moments at sea.
