EDITORS COMMENTS
Operating from a landing strip carved by RAF airmen and Yugoslav Partisans with picks and shovels out of vineyards among the rocky hills of a Dalmatian island, Spitfires and Hurricanes of Coastal Air Force provide vital close air support to Marshal Tito's campaign against superior enemy forces. These 'Island Commandos' have been relentless in their efforts, reporting numerous successful missions including blowing up enemy trains, sinking schooners, setting ferries on fire, and destroying petrol dumps and gun positions. The success of these operations is owed not only to the bravery and skill of the pilots but also to the unwavering dedication of RAF ground crews and the local Partisans who ensure that they remain airborne. Leading this remarkable unit is 21-year-old Squadron Leader A. LeHardy from Faversham, Kent. In this print captured in August 1944, we see two young Yugoslav girls assisting in serving officers at the RAF Officers Mess housed within an old brick building on the island. Their presence symbolizes unity between nations as they work together towards a common goal during World War II. This image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by both military personnel and civilians alike during this tumultuous time in history. It showcases not only acts of heroism but also moments where individuals find solace amidst chaos – sharing meals together while striving for victory.
