The Canadian Commandos captured this 230 ton vessel in their raid on Dieppe
The Canadian Commandos captured this 230 ton vessel in their raid on Dieppe and brought it to Britain where already it has done valuable service with the Navy. Now it has been handed over to the National Fire Service who have equipped the ship for fighting fires at sea. Manned entirely by NFS personnel, she is equipped to stay at sea for as long as four weeks, and is capable of pumping twenty tons of water a minute. Shortly she is going into service around the coast line of Britain, fighting fires on river banks, gibing aid to land unit and going to the aid of ships at sea. The first ship of its kind, she is used for peace time fire fighting to, which takes the NFS well and truly into the firing line, although they are, in this case, a non-combatant service. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable journey of a 230-ton vessel, once captured by the brave Canadian Commandos during their raid on Dieppe. After being brought to Britain, this ship found new purpose and served admirably with the Navy. However, its destiny took an unexpected turn as it was handed over to the National Fire Service (NFS) for fighting fires at sea. Manned entirely by NFS personnel, this mighty ship is now equipped to stay at sea for up to four weeks and possesses an impressive capability of pumping twenty tons of water per minute. Its transformation into a fire-fighting vessel marks a significant milestone in maritime history. The first of its kind, it stands ready to combat fires along Britain's coastline, provide aid to land units, and come to the rescue of ships in distress. Not limited solely to wartime duties, this ship also serves as a vital asset in peacetime fire-fighting efforts. This places the NFS directly on the firing line despite being a non-combatant service. In October 1944, while testing its powerful pumps off the coast, this photograph immortalizes both its strength and potential impact. As we gaze upon this image from Memory Lane Prints, we are reminded not only of the valor displayed during World War II but also of how diverse roles were assigned even within non-traditional services like firefighting.
