A German B1E 1 KG Incendiary bomb. The bomb consisted of a cylindrical body

A German B1E 1 KG Incendiary bomb.
The bomb consisted of a cylindrical body, made of magnesium alloy, filled with thermite, an incendiary compound, to which a three-finned steel tail was attached. The bomb was designed not explode, but on impact, the needle in the igniter was driven into a small percussion cap, which in turn ignited the thermite filling, and ultimately, the alloy casing itself, producing heat that was sufficient to melt steel.
Large quantities of incendiary bombs were dropped by the Luftwaffe during the 1940 - 41 bombing campaign on British towns and cities. The incendiary bomb proved to be one of the most effective weapons to be used by the German Air Force during the Blitz.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the menacing presence of a German B1E 1 KG Incendiary bomb, a weapon that wreaked havoc during World War II. The cylindrical body, constructed from magnesium alloy, contained a potent incendiary compound known as thermite. Attached to the body was a three-finned steel tail that ensured stability during flight. Unlike traditional bombs designed to explode upon impact, this incendiary bomb had a different purpose. Upon hitting its target, the needle in the igniter would be forcefully driven into a small percussion cap. This action ignited the thermite filling within and set off an intense chain reaction. The resulting heat generated by this inferno was so intense that it could melt even steel structures. During the infamous Blitz campaign of 1940-41, these incendiary bombs were relentlessly dropped by Luftwaffe planes on British towns and cities. Their devastating power made them one of the most effective weapons employed by Germany's Air Force at that time. This evocative image serves as a chilling reminder of the danger and destruction caused by these firebombs during World War II. It transports us back to September 1940 when Britain faced relentless attacks from above, leaving scars on both landscapes and hearts alike. As we gaze upon this historical relic captured through Memory Lane Prints' lens, let us remember those who endured such perilous times and honor their resilience in facing unimaginable danger head-on.
