Picture shows the city of Durham, as it looks from the main tower of Durham Cathedral
Picture shows the city of Durham, as it looks from the main tower of Durham Cathedral. This picture shows the Framwellgate Bridge which became pedestrian in the early 1970s, and St Margarets Church on the left.
Durham is a historic city and the county town of County Durham in North East England. The city lies on the River Wear, to the south-west of Sunderland, south of Newcastle upon Tyne and to the north of Darlington. Founded over the final resting place of St Cuthbert, its Norman cathedral (at the centre of this picture) became a centre of pilgrimage in medieval England.
The name " Durham" comes from the Celtic element " dun", signifying a hill fort, and the Old Norse " holme", which translates to island.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting city of Durham from a unique vantage point atop the main tower of Durham Cathedral. The image showcases the picturesque view of the city, with its historic landmarks and natural beauty on full display. In the foreground, we see Framwellgate Bridge, which transitioned into a pedestrian bridge in the early 1970s, symbolizing Durham's commitment to creating a more accessible and people-friendly environment. On the left side of the frame stands St Margarets Church, adding an architectural charm to this already stunning scene. Durham itself is steeped in history and serves as County Durham's county town in North East England. Situated along the serene River Wear, it lies southwest of Sunderland, south of Newcastle upon Tyne, and north of Darlington. The city's origins can be traced back to its Norman cathedral (prominently featured at the center), which became a significant pilgrimage site during medieval times. Interestingly, "Durham" derives from two distinct elements: "dun" representing a hill fort in Celtic language; and "holme" meaning island in Old Norse. This name perfectly encapsulates both its geographical setting and rich cultural heritage. Taken circa June 1st, 1965 by Mirrorpix for Memory Lane Prints collection, this aerial photograph provides an extraordinary glimpse into Durham's timeless allure. It beautifully combines elements like landscape views, river scenery, tourism potential while evoking nostalgia for those who cherish memories from that era.
