Reed Cutting on the Thames 1st May 1927
Within a stones throw of Chiswick church, not far from Hammersmith Bridge is a small island in the River Thames.
Here Mr John Davidson, who is the only remaining basket maker in the City of London, makes an annual visit, to cut and collect osiers which grow on the island.
These osiers are used in his trade, mostly making Billingsgate fish baskets

Reed Cutting on the Thames 1st May 1927 - A Glimpse into London's Basket Weaving Tradition

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to a bygone era, capturing a moment in time on the River Thames. Within close proximity of Chiswick church, nestled near Hammersmith Bridge, lies a small island that holds great significance for Mr John Davidson, the last remaining basket maker in the City of London. In this annual ritual dating back to May 1st, 1927, Mr Davidson ventures onto this picturesque island to harvest osiers - slender willow branches used extensively in his trade. With skilled precision and years of expertise passed down through generations, he carefully cuts and collects these vital materials that form the backbone of Billingsgate fish baskets. The image showcases two men diligently at work amidst a backdrop of reeds swaying gently with the river's current. Clad in traditional flat caps symbolic of their craft and industry, they navigate their rowing boat skillfully through calm waters. This snapshot not only immortalizes an age-old tradition but also offers us a glimpse into early twentieth-century England. It speaks volumes about the dedication required to preserve ancient crafts even as industrialization sweeps across nations. As we admire this photograph from Memory Lane Prints, let it serve as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage and pay homage to those unsung heroes like Mr John Davidson who tirelessly keep traditions alive against all odds.
