EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion in the life of Nick Bass, a young apprentice in the printing trade. It was taken on October 17th, 1969, as he celebrated the completion of his six-year apprenticeship at Wilkinson Bros, located near Leather Lane. In an unconventional and lighthearted tradition, Nick transformed into "Lady Codiva" to commemorate this milestone. Adorned with a necklace made of cods heads and tied to a trolley, he braved an onslaught of water, printers inks, flour, and pickle thrown by his fellow colleagues. The joyous atmosphere is palpable as students celebrate their own achievements by covering each other in flour nearby. The photograph beautifully encapsulates the spirit of camaraderie and joviality that permeated such occasions during that era. As Nick is rushed down Leather Lane on his trolley via the Daily Mirror building—a symbolically significant route—he embraces both laughter and excitement for what lies ahead. Taken by Doreen Spooner—an accomplished photographer known for her ability to capture candid moments—this image transports us back in time. It serves as a testament not only to Nick's personal achievement but also to the vibrant culture within the printing industry during those years. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints today, this print offers viewers an opportunity to glimpse into history while celebrating individual triumphs amidst shared experiences.
